The "De anima" Project

ms picture

The impetus behind this website comes from an international collaborative effort to produce an edition and complete translation of Buridan's questions on Aristotle's De anima, to be followed by a volume of interpretive and critical essays, all of which will be published by Springer.

  • The team:
    • Gyula Klima, Fordham University
    • Peter Sobol, University of Wisconsin (Madison)
    • Jack Zupko, Unviersity of Alberta
    • Peter Hartman, Loyola University Chicago
    • Sander de Boer, University of Groningen
    • Peter King, The University of Toronto
    • Claude Panaccio, Université du Québec à Montréal

Two thirds of the project (Books 2 and 3) will be based on existing editions and translations, which have already proved their mettle in the two decades they have served specialists of the field. The text editions, however, were based not on all the manuscripts that are available today, and the translations, useful as they were, are also in need of improvement. The new edition and translation will reflect a common, improved understanding of Buridan's doctrine, reflected also in a commonly accepted terminology.
